When the vapours of both these compounds are passed through bromine dissolved in carbon tetrachloride. The compound which decolourises the solution is ethene while the other is ethane.
Both the compounds are treated with Aq. KOH solution. On cooling, few drops of Nitric acid are added to neutralize the unreacted base. Then excess of AgNO3 solution is added. The compound which gives a white precipitate is benzyl chloride while the other is chlorobenzene.
